    Artist Statement

The Navajo Nation is a huge swath of land encompassing 27,000 square miles straddling northern Arizona, southern Utah and New Mexico.   It includes beautiful and familiar locations such as the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. This land is home to the Navajo people, many live in poverty without access to fresh water or electricity.  The reservation is a virtual food desert with as few as 15 supermarkets.  In 2015 on one of many trips to Arizona, I visited a Dine supermarket in Chinle, Arizona.  I was appalled by the lack of healthy/nutritious foods on the shelves and the limited choice of fresh fruits and vegetables.  I couldn’t help but notice the overall general health of the population in this market.  Many of them with walking aids and thick glasses, but most disturbing were the prevalence of obesity.  How did this happen to such a noble and proud people?
